What is new? Each time there's an update, I add a new current quote to act as an aide-mémoire. This is the first revision for quite a time. There's nothing too spectacular. Just lots of minor updates. But the book I have long been writing is finally taking shape. Watch this space! I continue to act as technical advisor to the Flood Studies Update R&D programme for the Office of Public Works. OPW is the lead agency for implementing flood risk management policy in Ireland. When time allows, I undertake personal research on my pet topic of inter-site dependence in extremes. [For reasons that made sense at the time, the website brands this collective risk estimation.] Two recent papers on inter-site dependence are complemented by Eight things you don’t want to know about flood risk. Flood risk may be much in the news in the UK, but it does not follow that we are all thinking about it! Those who recall the curiously strong dependence between floods on the Upper Lea at Water Hall and floods on the Turkey Brook at Albany Park will be pleased to hear that I finally got to the bottom of it. The answer lies in the soil ... and the hydrogeology. It only took me five years and a hint from ace hydrologist Mike Steel for the penny to drop. Some catchments are weird! I'll revamp the website design when I determine the colour of fashion for the 2010s. Hopefully, the dominant colour of the 2000s keeps reminding you of DWRconsult.
