Other terms & conditions

To those who don't know me well, please note that I will sometimes give informal advice. I want you to solve your own problems when you can, bringing only the special studies to me. However, you must only attribute advice to me where this has been given to you formally and for which I have received payment. If someone quotes my opinion to you, please don't be too embarrassed to check its authenticity. I will be pleased to confirm, clarify or correct attributions!

I undertake all work personally. For this and other reasons, I have to be selective, and reserve the right to refuse jobs without explanation. Because of the uncertainty for my workload, and the desire to do relatively specialised work, I am reluctant to bid competitively. When agreeing proposals or bids with a lead consultant - i.e. when acting as a consultant to a consultant - I allow my CV to be included only if my contribution to the project is to be significant.

Because of my self-employed status, I require payment arrangements to be crystal clear. The timing of payments to me must always reflect the timing of my inputs, not of your outputs or receipts. Please check that your organisation can adapt to this requirement.

Finally, please note that I do not have Professional Indemnity Insurance. I judge that premium rates for a self-employed sole-trader working in flood risk are unaffordably high for a meaningful degree of cover. I protect myself by applying due care and attention, and sometimes by explicit disclaimer. You should endeavour to protect yourself from the consequences of accepting, neglecting or misconstruing my advice.
