The book tries to live up to the homophone: Let us in applied hydrology. It is written principally for those with hydrology or hydrologist in their job description who — conscious of the critical role that water plays in our world — want to do much more than “point and click”. It may also help researchers in mid-career to appraise whether real-world problem-solving might sometimes be more fulfilling than scientific enquiry alone. Although Letters in applied hydrology focuses chiefly on UK applications, many of the ideas & principles discussed are generic, and will have relevance in other settings. Particular topics may also resonate with those beyond hydrology who sense that models are too often overvalued relative to observation, analysis & reasoning. The 76 topics present a partial picture of applied hydrology: partial in both senses. Some topics are considered in detail, some are dealt with philosophically, while others such as water quality are largely untreated. |
