Teton Dam

The unused draw-off tower at Teton, near Wilford, Idaho

The draw-off tower stands sentinel at Teton, Idaho.

Teton Dam failed on 5 June 1976, when the dam leaked on first-filling of the reservoir.

But for short-term warnings to evacuate, the loss of life (one account gives 11) would have been far greater.

While the dam design was flawed in its choice of fill materials, under-design against extreme floods might leave a similar monument.
