Reed, D.W. 1994a. Rainfall frequency analysis for flood design. In: "Coping with floods" (eds Rossi, G., Harmoncioglu, N., Yevjevich, V.), Kluwer, Dordrecht, 59–75.

Aspects of extreme value theory are discussed which relate to rainfall frequency estimation for flood design. After summarizing methods applicable to the analysis of extremes at a single site, the contribution discusses the "pooling" of data from several sites and the derivation of depth-duration-frequency relationships. The treatment of spatial (i.e. intersite) and temporal (i.e. inter-duration) dependence is seen to be relevant to achieving consistent estimates of rainfall frequency.
