Reed, D.W. 1985b. Calculating inflows to Newborough Fen. Paper to MAFF Conf. of River Engineers, Cranfield, 17-18 July 1985, 10 pp.
Studies of the hydrological behaviour of fenland catchments are complicated by the close control that the pumps exert on the drain system. A method is described for calculating the natural inflow to the Newborough Fen main drain by back-computation. Once a complete inflow sequence has been constructed it will be possible to test a range of pump operating rules. The approach imitates the derivation of "control curves" for pumped storage water resource systems and provides a basis for balancing the twin objectives of avoiding floods and minimizing energy costs.
