Some problems are identified in the Flood Studies Report method of rainfall frequency estimation. These are overcome by application of a new technique of rainfall growth estimation that takes explicit account of spatial dependence in extreme rainfalls. The technique is illustrated by derivation of a suite of 1-day rainfall growth curves for South West England.
