Reed, D.W., Martin, J. 2005. FSU: a new look at flood estimation for Ireland. Proc. National Hydrology Seminar, Tullamore, November 2005, 26–33.
The paper introduces the content and structure of the Flood Studies Update (FSU) programme being led by the Office of Public Works, and draws attention to factors that make flood estimation in Ireland a particular challenge. The main items to be delivered are new methods of rainfall and flood frequency estimation. The development of digital spatial datasets and appropriate GIS are central to the FSU. Contrasts are drawn with the 1999 Flood Estimation Handbook: highlighting lessons learned in the UK and drawing attention to characteristics of Irish catchments and datasets that call for a distinctive approach.
